Check local laws

LED driving lights are off-road lights. In most states, they are not legal to use on streets and highways. As such, it’s imperative to check your local road laws first before mounting one on your car.

Prepare the required materials

The usual LED driving light kit comes with mounting brackets, wires, nuts and bolts. In most cases, a wiring harness is also included. If not, then you can always purchase it separately. Always consider the LED driving light type and your vehicle’s wiring system when buying a wiring harness. Begin by laying the wiring harness on a floor or bench, to plan routing and installation in the engine bay. Removing the grille will often make access for routing the wiring harness from the lights back into the engine bay much easier. Please be sure to pay attention to the weight of led driving lights and choose the appropriate location to install. For example, a pair of 8.5inch led driving lights usually weighs about 7KG, so we generally do not recommend installing large driving lights on the hood of the vehicle. It is easy to damage the lamp body during emergency braking or driving on difficult roads.In contrast, some small LED driving lights like 4 inch can be installed anywhere.

You will need to identify the location you intend to mount the spot light first in order to cut the proper lengths of wire.

Before the installation, remember to disconnect your car battery. To avoid shorting it, remove the wire of the ground terminal first, followed by the positive terminal.

After the car prepping, it is important to consider sturdiness when choosing a mounting location. It should be steady enough to hold your driving lights in place whenever you go off-roading. In addition, the area should be safe for drilling, meaning, no other automotive parts should be compromised during installation.

That said, a safe drilling procedure is a must. Mark your holes using a marker pen first before puncturing anything. 

Attach the bolts but remember to screw them loosely because they will be adjusted multiple times later on.

Set the switch in place

Start by detaching the switch wire segment from the main harness, then route and find your way through your firewall to reach the dashboard. After finding the desired location, use an adhesive type to put the switch in place. Reconnect the other end wiring line of the switch back to the wiring harness.

Position the relay and the cables

You can bolt the relay anywhere on your firewall as long as its location is near the battery. Afterward, take the red positive cable and mount it directly to the red terminal of the battery. Conversely, ground the black negative cable by attaching it to the chassis. Make it a point to cleanly tuck the excess wires and cables in the engine bay and avoid putting the wires close to high-heat zones.

Wire harness to the driving lights

Now work on the remaining set of wires on your harness. They are the connectors to your LED driving lights. Run them to where your driving lights are. Hook up the connector wires to your driving light(red to red and black to black). When everything is in place, go back to your driving light brackets and adjust the driving light’s angle. Secure by tightening the bolts once you’re satisfied with the position. That’s it! You can now turn on the light and enjoy your upgraded lighting system.

After the installation, test that the mounting is sturdy by applying appropriate force to the mounting bracket and making sure that there is no wobble. 

Then it’s time to test and make sure that your LED light bar is working as it should. Remember to not stand directly in front of your light as you are turning it on in order to avoid the risk of eye injury from the light. Instead, look around the light bar when checking for functionality.
